The Dark Side of Self-Help Books
Let's talk about the toxic self-help industry and its biggest problems.
Do you follow personal growth accounts? Bought self-help books? Courses? But, what if the industry that promises to make you "better" is actually making everything worse?
The self-improvement industry thrives on the myth that there is something wrong with you that needs to be improved. The dark side of self-improvement is that it feeds on our insecurities.
As a freshman at the University, I felt very insecure about myself, so I started consuming as much self-help content as possible. I wanted to figure out "what is wrong with me". However, when I finished the book, I'd move onto the next self-help book I deemed crucial and it put me in a loop of wanting more and more without putting anything into practice from the books I had read.
In this podcast episode, I’ll take a dive into the dark side of self-help, and the traps that may lie in wait for those who enter this world. I’ll be sharing with you pitfalls and rip-offs of the self-help industry to avoid.
